TALAMUKA-‘A-TONGA | Tonga Bilingual Class

Mālō e lelei!

TALAMUKA-‘A-TONGA is our Tongan bilingual learning pathway. Established in 2021, it now includes two classes: Year 1–4 and Year 5–8.

Our opening ceremony was led by our local Church Minister, who offered a blessing for lifelong learning for both students and staff. This was followed by a future-focused address from Dr Melenaite Taumoefolau, Senior Lecturer in Tongan Language and Pacific Studies at the University of Auckland, who spoke about strengthening the learning journeys of Tongan learners. Dr Rae Siʻilata also joined us to affirm our strategic commitment to growing the cultural competence of both students and staff.

We were honoured to be gifted the name TALAMUKA-‘A-TONGA, meaning blossoming growth, by the Princess of Tonga.

Our learners are taught by Mrs Luti Tafea, Ms Laukau Veatupu, and release teacher Ms Tiulipe Helu. Mrs Tafea is also the Leo Moana Dual Pacific Languages Team Leader. Teaching and learning in TALAMUKA-‘A-TONGA is delivered through a 50:50 model of Tongan and English.

In 2022, we were delighted to receive the Ministry of Education Pacific Education Innovation Fund. This funding supported a project inquiry led by Mrs Tafea and enabled the purchase of key literacy resources to strengthen learning outcomes for our students. We are very proud of the continued growth and success of TALAMUKA-‘A-TONGA.

Entry criteria for this pathway can be found on our Enrolment page. Families are very welcome to contact Mrs Tafea for further information.
